Developed in California in the 1960s, geometric restroom door signs (circle for women, triangle for men, and a contrasting triangle on top of a circle for unisex) were intended as an instant visual confirmation of the genders that could use a particular restroom. California's Title 24 geometric restroom door signs have been widely adopted by other states.
